Bill of Rights: Second Amendment

MY INTERPRETATION

Picture
In my opinion, I think the Second Amendment was mainly written so American citizens can defend and protect themselves from enemies. However the time period this amendment was written is different than the modern issues in the 21st century. For example, the War of 1812, and the British invaded. Also the United States didn't have a well-regulated militia such as our National Guard today. Instead the states only had a volunteer militia.

Some of the lower federal courts interpret the Second Amendment as not applying to the states. But the Bill of Rights in general applies to all the people in the United States. The Second Amendment is pretty clear and straight forward, but there has been a lot of debate and arguments about what the Second Amendment actually means. I think it means everyone in the Unitd states can own and use firearms for their own security.

The Bill of Rights deals with civil rights, property rights, individual rights, etc. After all the police can't help someone from hurting you, but all they can do is find the person after they hurt you. Many politicians think that banning guns or enforcing strict gun control will lower the homicide rate. However I think that if you take something from someone, they would want it even more. We experience this with the 18th Amendment as well; alcohol was prohibited so alcohol was smuggled into the country. For example, when you tell a kid they can't do something like chewing gum or using phones/iPods at school they'll do it anyway behind the teacher's back, and then they'll get in trouble, and it's just a huge mess.
